Polar bear gets new home
20th May 2009
Mercedes is the only polar bear in the UK and has lived in Edinburgh zoo since 1984. Now the army is building her a new enclosure.
The 75th Engineer Regiment is constructing a 4 acre enclosure for Mercedes at the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie.
She will move in later this year in what will be the largest polar bear enclosure in Europe.
So why is the army helping out?
It’s part of a new programme called ‘Military Aid to the Civilian Community’ whereby the army gets the chance to train and practice their skills while others benefit.
80 soldiers are involved in the project and the new home will cost the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland a quarter of the £300,000 original estimate.
Seems like the zoo, the army and of course Mercedes will benefit from the arrangement.
