Let’s sleep on it
9th June 2009
Scientists have apparently discovered that sleeping on a problem can help solve it. So chill out and leave it till the morning.
Do I do another ski season? ………… How do I get my book commissioned about skiing all the resorts in the world so I can go to do the research? ………… Do I want to buy the latest carvers or a pair of reverse camber off piste monsters? ………….. Shall I choose Andermatt or Zermatt next winter? ………. Or maybe something in between…… One more beer or home for bed?………
We have huge problems as skiers and snowboarders but according to this latest survey sleeping on the problem seems to be the way forward.
And the best time for the problems to be solved is when we are dreaming and are in the REM stage (rapid eye movement)The researchers believe REM sleep allows the brain to form new nerve connections without the interference of other thought pathways that occur when we are awake or in non-dream-state sleep.
“We propose that REM sleep is important for assimilating new information into past experience to create a richer network of associations for future use,” the researchers said.
So next time you have a dilemma about skiing, or anything else for that matter, then go and have a good sleep seems to be the advice.
REM – now there’s a good name for a rock band.
