iPOD has ski use
16th June 2009
Do you fancy hooking up you iPod to your skis or snowboard? Not so you can play music or watch a film but rather see how fast you have gone, how much air you have taken and how much power you have used.
The company has just filed a series of patents in the USA for the development, so it is serious, however it is still very much in the design stage.
The patent application runs to 41 pages.
Essentially a series of sensors would be positioned on the underside of the ski and snowboard, and they would be powered by small batteries housed in a special compartment. They would be linked into the LCD display on an iPod and, hey presto, you can see all the facts and figures.
For a far more detailed explanation with drawings and comments from the developers see here.
So, is it just another gimmick or may it be of some use?
Well it would certainly settle the endless rows in the fun park about who got more air. It would sort out who skis faster. It would please the people who like to know statistics and want to quantify everything.
In fact as long as the cost is not prohibitive and people don’t spend the whole time fiddling around with an electronic device rather than riding it seems like a pretty good idea to us here at PlanetSKI.
We’ll keep you posted how development goes.
