Fancy running up some stairs?
9th August 2009
11,674 of them to be precise. The stairway by the Niesen railway in central Switzerland is the longest in the world and is open once a year for a race.
The stairway is in The Guiness Book of Records and each year 240 people race up them to see who can get to the top first.
It’s the only time the stairway is open to the public.
The winner takes just over an hour – the fastest time is 1 hour 3 minutes and 7 seconds and judging by the slideshow in this story on www.swissinfo.com is only for the fit!
The railway is in the Bernese Oberland and gives spectacular views over Lake Thun.
It was started in 1906 and opened in 1910.
