Yodeling – love it or loath it
10th May 2010
The Swiss Yodeling Association is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Some say it is an historic national tradition and it is one of the most beautiful mountain sounds. Others have a different view.
It is instantly recognisable and for its enthusiasts there is no sound quite like it and is part of a national folk tradition.
It is popular in the German speaking Alpine regions.
For others though it is seen as old-fashioned, cliché and they question the sort of people that do it. Think Morris Dancers.
But there is a new breed of Swiss yodelers.
See the You Tube video below from the rock group Sonalp, that uses the singing style in its brand of world music.
And this rather odd yodeling cowboy.
But if you want something slightly more traditional then take a look at this one.
For many Swiss though it is part of their national heritage and the centenary of the Association is certainly getting plenty of media attention.
