Another animal can ski
27th July 2011
Last week we had the skiing ostriches and earlier in the year we reported on the sad demise of a water skiing elephant. Now it is the turn of the squirrels to don a pair of skis.
You may have heard of Twiggy the water-skiing squirrel as there have already been six incarnations of the animal criss-crossing the USA on tour and appearing on TV.
The rodent has performed its (their) tricks on TV; “The Late Show with David Letterman”, “Good Morning America” and “Animal Planet” to name but a few.
They have boosted the bank balance of their owners with Dunkin’ Doughnuts adverts and the films “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” “Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgundy” and TV’s “Down to Earth” and “Megamind.”
So, here is one of the Twiggys in action.
For our recent story on the skiing ostriches then see here and for the (slightly) related story on the death of the world’ best waterskiing elephant, Queenie, then here is our PlanetSKI tribute to the skiing beast.
So how did the squirrels learn to water ski in the first place?
A Mr and Mrs Best from Florida found a squirrel blown out of its nest by a hurricane back in 1978 and adopted it.
They took it everywhere with them including, yes, waterskiing.
Later they bought their daughter a remote controlled boat for her birthday and saw if it was possbible to pull a squirrel along behind it. The rest is history.
All they had to do was replace one squirrel with another as they passed on to meet the great grey squirrel in the sky.
Elephants, ostriches and now squirrels.
We are just wondering which animal will be next?
If you know of another one that can ski on either snow or water then do let us know.
