PlanetSKI speaks to……Ed Drake
28th September 2011
Britain’s number one male ski racer has been training hard this summer and looking forward to the coming season. He is though worried about the dangers of downhill racing. We caught up with him for a PlanetSKI video interview.
25- year old Ed Drake is a bright prospect.
He had a top 30 finish in the super combined in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and has his sights firmly set on the next Games at Sochi in 2014. This summer he has been training in Chile and spending many, many hours in the gym.
He is doing it against the odds with little support and a lack of funds, but Ed Drake is nothing if not determined
In the interview he tells us what motivates him, what is like being the outsider, racing against Bode Miller, and what he makes of the changes to race skis and the dangers of being a downhill racer – skiing at 80mph on sheet ice down a steep mountain.
During his summer training in Chile he not only had to battle with a lack of funds, but also a lack of oxygen!
Ed starts his season in November with the speed events, the Downhill and Super-G, in Lake Louise, Canada, and then he hopes to move onto Beaver Creek in the USA. We wish him the best of luck and will be following his progress this winter.
Here at PlanetSKI we filmed one of his fund raising events at the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre a couple of years ago.
