In the Alps this week the heaviest of the snow has fallen on the Kitzteinhorn glacier above Kaprun in Austria.
After a few days of stormy weather the clouds have mostly lifted.
This is what it looked like last Wednesday from the top at over 3,000m:
The glacier is already open for some limited skiing and though the clouds earlier in the week meant poor visibility, the snow is very welcome indeed.
The main lifts and a lift at the top of the glacier are open.
In Hintertux in the Tirol there has also been some snow with skiers and snowboarders out enjoying some of the first turns of the winter.
A growing number of resorts open this month with more in November – check out this latest PlanetSKI story that details which resorts are opening. And when.
The PlanetSKI content editor, James Cove, will be in Stubai in the Austrian Tirol in a couple of weeks and he is keeping his fingers crossed.
“None of this will have any bearing on the winter whatsoever and may not even have any impact in two weeks when I am out in the Alps, but it sure as hell looks good to me!” said James.
Pitztal in the Tirol is also open with skiers and snowboarders making a few turns on the glacier.
And just in case you are wondering it now looks rather good at lower altitude.
This was Chamonix on Thursday morning.
Over in North America resorts are building up to winter.
Some snow has fallen in Whistler in Canada.
On Thursday night it received 15cm of fresh snow.
And in the resort of Lake Louise near Banff snow has fallen and preparations are underway for the winter.
In the USA Colorado Arapahoe Basin’s snowmaking team fired up the snow guns this week.
“We will keep going as long as the weather permits, and we are prepared to run 24-hours a day if Mother Nature deems it possible. Ideally, we’re looking for a wet bulb temperature of 28 degrees or lower. That means, not only do temps need to be below freezing, but the humidity should be low as well,” said a statement from the resort.
See here for a seperate story on PlanetSKI as the snow cannons are switched on.
Elsewhere the natural variety is falling.
