MORE SNOW IN THE ALPS
10th October 2016
Snow is continuing to fall the Alps & it’s not just at altitude as temperatures plunge. Check out our latest picture and videos as winter gets ever closer. UPDATED
Snow has been falling across parts of the Alps in the last couple of days and it is continuing.
Italy and Austria have seen the best of the October snow as we reported earlier in the week – scroll down this article to see some earlier photos and videos.
Now it is looking rather good in France too according to these images we have from Thursday.
Arc 1950 is promoting its offerings over the Festive Season in December so the early snow is very welcome.
Whether it stays or not remains to be seen, but it has put a smile on people’s faces.
And it is snowing down in the valleys too.
The images below were taken by Fergus from VIP SKI as he headed up the mountain road to Alpe d’Huez on Thursday morning.
VIP SKI has some good deals over December – see our earlier feature on what’s in store for this winter at VIP SKI.
The scene in Vars, France, on Thursday morning.
Over in Austria the glacier resort of Hintertux in the Austrian Tirol has already opened some of its upper slopes and this is what it looks like at the bottom of the main lift.
And it is looking pretty good in Stubai where 40cm of fresh snow has fallen:
And here is the view from the top of Stubai:
“It’s been a good start for our Autumn skiers and things are looking good for the October half term – fresh snow on the Stubai glacier (40cm) and similar falls on the Pitztal glacier do mean that there are a few whiiteouts but we can put up with this for the ultimate benefit of fresh snow,” said Katie Waddington from Zenith Holidays.
Zenith offers early season holidays to the Austrian glacier resorts that are currently open – see here for further details if you fancy making some early turns in the fresh powder.
“It’s snowing in the Alps! Over 50cm of snow has fallen in the highest regions of the Alps since the weekend with even more on the way. Snow is falling down to resort level in some parts of the Alps as temperatures drop,” report our friends over at Iglu Ski.
As Iglu Ski said, the snow didn’t just fall at high altitude in the Alps – it is down to the valley floor in places.
And in Monterosa too, watch the video below.
And on the ski slopes 🙂
See this article for some stunning instagram images of the snow in Italy.
Winter is still a way off and much will melt but it is a sure sign that the ski season is on its way.
The images below come from the high altitude of Obergurgl in the Austrian Tirol.
The resort opens 17th November.
The snow has caused some travel disruption.
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road in the Tirol gurgl is temporarily closed due to the snowfall.
Teams are now out trying to clear the road for traffic.
Meanwhile, nearby Hintertux in the Tirol in Austria is also getting some snow.
And further over on the Kitzsteinhorn…
And elsewhere, in the Swiss Alps…
However, France missed out on the latest snow.
Tignes, which opened on 1st October, has just a little of the white stuff ……. and a lot of brown.
However the temperatures are cold enough to make snow.
The image below comes from Les3Vallees.
And today another non-glacier resort opened in Scandinavia – Ruka in Finland.
See here for a PlanetSKI report on how they made the snow last winter and then preserved it over the summer so the resort could open in the autumn.
We are getting more information about the recent snow in the Alps so do check back later today for more pictures and some videos.
And just in case you are wondering it is snowing in Canada too.
The image below was sent to us by a reader from the town of Red Deer, between Calgary and Edmonton.
In Banff the temperature is already well below freezing and snow is falling.
And the snow cannons have been switched on over on the east coast of the USA too:
