Thing have taken a turn for the better in the USA but, by and large, it is too little too late.

There has been something of a snow drought this autumn with precious little natural snow and resorts putting back their opening dates.

See here for an earlier PlanetSKI story as the flakes stubbornly refused to fall.

However some snow has finally fallen in Colorado in the past few days.

“Snow is currently falling at resorts along the Continental Divide and will continue to do so for the rest of the day. If weather forecasts hold, guests visiting ski areas on Thanksgiving morning could enjoy some fresh snow,” said a statement from Colorado Ski Country on Wednesday.

Purgatory, which opened last Saturday, received 45cm while Wolf Creek, which opens on Thanksgiving Day has had 40cm.

Winter Park has had 18cm.

No skiing will be available on Aspen Mountain for Thanksgiving – its originally scheduled opening day.

It is offering free sightseeing rides on the Silver Queen Gondola on Aspen Mountain and the Elk Camp Gondola on Snowmass.

Both gondolas will run 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
