HEAVY SNOW CONTINUES IN NORTH AMERICA
15th December 2016
The USA and Canada are the places to be for powder snow. After a poor start in November there has been continuous snow in some of the major resorts. In Canada it’s been the longest cold snap for 20 years in places. UPDATED
The latest pictures and information we have comes from Whistler in Canada.
“We have received 38cm of snow in the last 48 hours. It’s been a great start to the holiday season in Whistler as the snow continues to fall today with more snow in the forecast on Thursday,” said a statement from the resort.
However the latest storm brought strong winds with gusts up to 100km/h and some lifts could not operate.
The storm is expected to clear by Friday and conditions should be pretty epic.
Whistler Blackcomb is now 100% open with 8,171 acres of skiable terrain.
And this is how we describe conditions in North America in our latest snow report.
USA: Snow conditions are generally excellent in the resorts of the western US, with plenty more snow in the forecast. Jackson Hole (170cm upper base) in Wyoming is doing particularly well right now with heavy snow falling today and tomorrow before skies clear on Saturday.
Over in Colorado, snow depths are generally more modest but conditions are still excellent in Winter Park (96cm upper base) with more snow expected over the coming days.
CANADA: Snow conditions remain excellent in Whistler thanks to the big storms earlier this month. Right now the weather is cold and sunny and the mid-mountain base 163cm deep.
Conditions are also very good further inland, where there is 130cm of settled snow at altitude in Fernie and more snow is expected later this weekend.
In Banff it has been bitterly cold.
“It’s been freezing. It’s the longest cold snap that Banff have had for 20 years apparently. It’s been -30 nearly every day for two weeks. The lowest was -35 with wind chill and has been consistently colder than the North Pole for the two weeks. It’s been too cold to snow at all,” said PlanetSKI’s Alex Cove from Sunshine Village near Banff where he works as a ski instructor.
IIn fact the snow is so good in Whistler Father Xmas has been out for a few turns:

“It just keeps snowing & snowing & snowing!! 😀😀😀 Lots more snow in the forecast for Friday & Saturday! Keep it coming!” said a statement from Winter Park in Colorado, USA.
The weather front is sweeping across the USA bringing snow and cold temperatures from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Lakes.
The ski resorts and cities of the eastern seaboard are now preparing.
Boston and New York are expecting up to 15cm of snow.
A few more photos of snow in New York are included at the end of this piece.
38 US states are under winter weather alerts, including Texas and Arizona, which usually boast warmer weather at this time of year.
In the mountains there have been several avalanches that have blocked roads and there are concerns for further slides.
Teton Pass in Wyoming remains closed after an avalanche 7m deep buried both lanes of Highway 22.
Loveland Pass in Coloroado, near the ski resort with the same name, has been closed due to avalanche risk.
The Utah Avalanche Center says there is avalanche danger in the western Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah with dangerous conditons in the backcountry across the mountains of central and northern Utah.
There has been snow further north in Canada.
Here is Sun Peaks in British Columbia.
The pictures were sent to us by the British operator, Flexiski.com
PlanetSKI was in Sun Peaks last winter as we toured British Columbia in a motorhome – see here for the road to Sun Peaks.
And we have just been sent some information from Jackson Hole in Wyoming, USA.
“This week has been somewhat of a dream for us here in Jackson Hole. Close to 1m of snow have fallen from this storm, and more is predicted all week. And the icing on the cake – the entire upper mountain has now opened! The Aerial Tram was cleared by Ski Patrol to open late Sunday afternoon'” said a statement from the resort.
And here’s a video too.
“Anyone looking for tonnes of snow with plenty of powder to boot should look no further than Jackson Hole. The renowned resort in Wyoming has been inundated with snow over recent days and is leading the charge in seasonal snowfall with a total 480cm up top already this season,” the statement from Jackson Hole added.
Jackson Hole is an iconic ski resort, but one we have yet to visit.
“I have had the pleasure and priveledge to ski in over 600 ski resorts across the world, but never Jackson Hole. I hope to correct that omission this winter with a trip in February,” said the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove.
