New ways to get there, fresh things to do & Ski Club guided trips; Austria’s ski area continues to step it up with winter in sight. NEW
Overnight rail journeys to the mountains mean that skiers and snowboarders can get in extra days on the slopes.
Austrian rail operator, OBB is offering sleeper trains to the Alps:
Eurostar to Brussels, an ICE or Thalys train to Cologne and a NightJet sleeper to the Tirol.
“This is a great addition to the suite of rail journeys available to skiers,” the founder of independent rail-ski guide Snowcarbon, Daniel Elkan, says.
“It might not be a direct journey, but you travel on quality trains and can really make the journey part of the holiday on your way to some fabulous Austrian resorts.”
Return rail fares for adults start from £215pp.
Airlines are upping the number of flights to both Innsbruck and Salzburg in anticipation of the ski season.
St. Anton Am Arlberg, Stubai and Mayrhofen are easy, quick transfers from Innsbruck and are world class resorts.
Kitzbüheler Alpen, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental and St. Johann in Tirol are all within 90 minutes of Salzburg.
Prices starting at £40 one way to Innsbruck and £37 one way to Salzburg make it difficult not to consider getting to all of them this season.
British Airways is running flights from London Heathrow to Innsbruck six times a week, London Heathrow to Salzburg four times a week and London Gatwick to Innsbruck five times.
easyJet runs from Gatwick and Bristol and Monarch airline from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham.
SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental consists of nine villages, has 284km of pistes and 90 lifts.
In short – it’s huge.
And now the area has invested €4.5 million.
It has four fun parks, floodlit toboggan runs and winter hiking trails as well as the decent amount of skiing.

Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau – the Tirol likes its long easy-to-say names – has two new rides.
Ready for the fast approaching ski season, the resort has added an eight-man gondola from Auffach to Schatzberg.
Also new is the Alpine Coaster in Alpbach. The ‘Alpbachtaler Lauser-Sauser‘ roller-coaster is a year-round ride for thrill seekers off skis.
Sölden, known for its role in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre, has a new restaurant on the Rettenbach glacier.
Panorama Restaurant is at 2,675 metres and has a terrace to enjoy the views from up high.
There will be a day bar as well as an ice bar with a mobile roof so catch maximum rays.
Freshtracks, part of the Ski Club Great Britain, has added three new holidays to Pitztal, called the Exploration weeks.
It is Austria’s highest glacier ski resort, and has skiing from September to May.

WHERE TO STAY?
Inghams is introducing the four-star superior Schloss Mittersill spa hotel and Chalet Linda in Kitzbühel to its list.
The Schloss Mittersill is a former 12th century castle that dates back to 1150.

The five-star hotel is a 15 minute drive by private shuttle from the ski slopes and has an award winning spa.
