Loveland’s powder-hound sports a pair of ski goggles. He is not the only dog to wear them! PlanetSKI investigates. NEW
Is this the latest health fad or a fashion statement for pooches?
Who would have thought that man’s best friend needs to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays and from the elements, but according to vets they do.
We spotted this photo of Loveland’s new powder-hound and mountain-mascot.
He’s a Bernese Mountain dog and he’s called Parker.
Examining the photo closer we spotted they were goggles made by Rex Specs and provided a near perfect snug fit across Parker’s eyes and snout, so they weren’t simpy kiddies goggles placed over his eyes.
It seems, there is more to it than ‘cuteness’, there is a more serious side to dogs wearing ski goggles.
According to Rex Specs who make an extensive range of goggles for pooches, goggles are suitable for “K9’s riding the wild roads in your motorcycle sidecar, hiking a mountain, or on a hunting excursion.”
They provide protection for working dogs, rescue dogs in war zones, hunting dogs, gun dogs and dogs working in US defence departments, and more….
Some Rex Specs testimonials include comments from owners of dogs with Glaucoma, Plasmoma and with other eye conditons and infections.
Eye protection is recommended for dogs diagnosed with eye conditions such as Chronic Superficial Keratitis (Pannus) which is a common canine eye condition.
Pannus is prevalent throughout the Rocky Mountain West, where UV rays are strong and damaging.
Pannus is a corneal inflammation that is worsened by exposure to the sun and snow reflection and eventually leads to scarring and possibly blindness.
So in these cases goggles can provide the protection these pooches need.
The goggles come in different colours, a selection of coloured lens tints, and a variety of sizes, but at $79.95 they are a little expensive.
The Rex Specs canine photoshoots are cute and have attracted a massive following with over 44,000 ardent followers on Instagram.
Featured below are some of the pooches from Instagram in snowy environments posing with their snazzy eye wear, plus we’ve included more photos of Parker.
