INVESTIGATION AFTER CHAMONIX AVALANCHE DEATH

A 33-year old Frenchman was caught at the weekend in the Aiguille Rouges. He was alone at the time.

The authorities were alerted by his girlfriend, when he failed to return home on Saturday evening.

He was climbing up earlier in the day when the avalanche struck.

Once alerted the authorities found his car in a car park in Vallorcine and then launched a search by helicopter.

They found an ice axe and a single ski on the mountainside and then, 500m lower, his body.

His name has not been released.

He is said to be a highly experienced mountaineer and skier with several steep descents under his belt.

With all resorts closed in France and high levels of snow at altitude a hardy few are still ski touring or mountaineering.

Stubai, Hintertux and Kaprun remain open in Austria.

In Switzerland it is just Zermatt and Engelberg.
