KITZBUHEL: MULTI-MILLION EURO UPGRADE TO LIFT
9th August 2019
The 35-year-old Fleckalmbahn gondola in the Austrian Tirol resort is getting a major facelift for next winter.
The €27.5 million project is well under way and will be complete by December.
The promise is bigger, faster and more comfortable cabins.
The new lift will have 10-person cabins that travel at 70 kph up to the slopes.
It will transport 190 additional skiers and snowboarders up the mountain every hour.
The resort says annual energy consumption will drop dramatically by 75,000 kWh.
The old lift could carry only six passengers at a speed of 40kph.
The upgrade is one of many lift improvements in the Alps and North America for next winter.
The new Zell am See Express, also in Austria, will link the resort to the already huge Ski Circus, as we reported on Tuesday 6th August in News In Brief.
And here is the new Zell am See Express being tested:
The new Fleckalmbahn is due to open on 14th December 2019.
It is home to the famous Streif ski run which hosts the Hahnekamm World Cup downhill.
Kitzbühel is easily accessible from Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich airports with direct flights from several UK airports.
Despite its relatively low altitude ( 800m up to 2,000m), it has a long ski season which generally lasts for 200 days from October to April.
There are 57 lifts and 185km of pistes.
