We’ve been eyeing up the vast collection of goggles & sunglasses for the winter. We select our two favourites.
SMITH 4D MAG GOGGLES WITH CHROMAPOP LENS £250
The price may make your eyes water but the new Smith 4D Mag goggles will also give them a lot more to look at.
Smith’s innovative new ‘BirdsEye Vision’ lens technology provides a 25 per cent increase in the overall field of view compared to the company’ already excellent I/O MAG lens.
On top of that the 4D Mag comes with company’s superb dual lock mechanism in the frame.
This allows you to change the lens easily in a matter of seconds (the lens is held in place with lightweight magnets integrated into the frame).
You get a bright light and low light ChromaPop performance lens with the package.
Although costly you could say you’re literally getting two pairs of goggles for the price of one.
Other really useful features of the Smith 4D Mag include the ‘Quikfit’ strap system with a buckle clip.
You can take the goggles on and off without having to slide them over your head/helmet (they are, of course, helmet compatible).
Smith’s ‘AirEvac’ system reduces fogging and there’s an ultra-wide, silicone backed strap for a more comfortable fit.
They also look good – not too bulky and plenty stylish – and come with a rugged storage box and soft cloth bag.
VERDICT Really excellent, albeit expensive, goggles providing great field of vision and two lens options
DRAGON EXCURSION X SUNGLASSES £199 www.dragonalliance.com
These stylish sunnies from Dragon have been designed specifically for high mountain use.
They come with removable side shields for better eye protection and a detachable leash and interchangeable cable temples for added security.
Other useful features include a ventilated rubber nose pad which gives good grip and improves airflow so you sweat less.
The Dragon Lumalens ‘Smoke’ lens is specifically designed for snow- based activities whilst at the same time offering good vision in cloudier conditions; the lenses are also water and dirt repellent.
In use the Excursion X works really well.
They feel very light and unobtrusive at the same time as being sturdy enough that you can handle them confidently without any worries that rough treatment may cause damage.
They also look really stylish – always important with shades, of course.
They will appeal especially to skiers who want a pair of glasses that look equally at home on the beach and in town as in the mountains.
VERDICT Cool stylish, versatile and very effective high mountain sunglasses from Dragon, but at a steep price.
