Skiworld is the only UK tour operator that offers a genuine ski chalet experience in the US. PlanetSKI joins in the house-party at Breckenridge, Colorado.

A typical chalet holiday sees groups of people sharing a property with a host or hosts on hand to do all the cooking, cleaning and offering advice about the resort and its slopes.

"A chalet holiday is a home-from-home. Come to breakfast in your slippers, enjoy your canapés and an aperitif with your feet up in front of the fire and enjoy a delicious supper cooked from scratch with no clearing up or washing up to do," said the sales & marketing director of Skiworld, Diane Palumbo.

"With our trained hosts in situ, you have someone on hand all the time to advise you on snow conditions, the best places to ski, where to eat on the mountain and which are the best and quickest lifts."

"It's a personal concierge service in your home-from-home."

It is a firm favourite among many people, while a few others do it once and never again.

Many foreigners can't understand it.

"What! You chose to go on a holiday with people you don't know and then share breakfast and dinner with them and effectively be with them for a week. Pah! it sounds worse than Big Brother," said a French friend of mine recently, with the customary gallic frown and shrug of the shoulders.

As I walked up to Chalet Victoria in Breckenridge his words were ringing in my ears.

And inside?

The chalet sleeps 8 and is set in a fabulous location with the neigbouring homes being typical of Breckenridge architecture.

Main Street with its bars and restaurants is under 5-minutes away.

The ski lifts are a short bus ride on a very efficient network.

So far, so good.

Now before going into detail of the chalet experience let me introduce Breckenridge.

I have visited many times before and it is one of my favourite well-known resorts in Colorado.

Perhaps even the USA.

And I'm not the only one as it's the most popular US resort with the British.

See here for a detailed report I posted on my last visit to Breck in 2017.

It has some superb terrain.

Expert runs of the newly installed chairlift on Peak 6, to the Imperial Express what is the highest chairlift in the USA to the double black diamonds off Peak 10.

There are moguls aplenty plus a massive half-pipe and fun park.

The GB Park & Pipe team come here to train.

There are countless intermediate trails and large wide easy green runs for families and beginners.

Breck really does have something for everyone.

But what of the chalet experience with Skiworld?

I loved it.

From the cake after skiing.

And dinner itself.

Regular readers will know I spent almost a month roaming around Canada and North America in February and early March.

Skiworld's Chalet Victoria was the last stop on my tour.

To eat to what I would describe as "home cooking" was an utter treat.

Believe me there are only so many ribs, burgers and chicken wings a man can consume.

But I have left out the killer ingredient.

This man, 37-year old Paul Jones.

He is a trained chef and produced the fabulous food.

"I am first and foremost a chef. I'm not so keen on folding napkins into the shape of swans and such like but I do like to produce food to the very best of my ability."

"The chalet experience is a great one for me and the guests as we get to know each other and enjoy each other's company."

"And then of course here in Breckenridge there is the fabulous skiing. I have been here 3 years now and I have no plans to be anywhere else over the coming winters."

And the menus he creates after skiing?

His secrets were tucked away in the corner.

The other guests were all 'Paul Regulars'.

Some had been hosted by him when he worked in Winter Park in Colorado and now followed him to Breckenridge.

Others had been to Breckenridge with Skiworld before and were back for more.

The huge advantage of a chalet holiday is that you know all your costs up front.

Dinner out every evening in the US can mount up but with a chalet holiday you have 3 or 4 courses provided, with wine included on most evenings.

And you still have the flexibility to dine out.

It is slightly odd to be be thrown in with complete strangers, but then that is also the attraction.

You meet new people and hear their tales - but be very careful if the subject of Brexit is raised Wink

There may not be agreement on every subject but all are united by one thing; skiing.

Oh, and Paul who also enjoys a drink with his guests in the local bars after dinner.

And on leaving after my short stop-over I can report that I am a convert.

A European-style chalet hoiday in the USA is a treat.

And a rare one at that because, as far as I know, there are only two such properties - and they are both offered by Skiworld.
