HOLD ON TIGHT - Jane Peel, Copper Mountain
Friday March 9, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

It's not all about the skiing in Copper Mountain. There's a lot more to get the heart racing and entertain the kids and wannabe kids.

The Colorado resort just a short hop from Denver is a favourite for city weekenders and American holidaymakers.

But few British skiers and snowboarders visit and we think that's a big mistake.

See our earlier article as we tackle the varied terrain the mountain has to offer:

As far as we're concerned, the skiing at Copper is good enough reason to come here, especially now that Norwegian Airlines has introduced low-cost direct flights from London Gatwick to Denver, starting at  £340 return.

But aside from the skiing or snowboarding there are other activities that make it an attractive destination, especially for families.

Copper prides itself on being family friendly and perhaps the biggest draw away from the snow is the Woodward Copper Barn.

It's an indoor action sports and freestyle centre that's as welcoming to tiny children as it is to the elite ski and snowboard athletes who use it to practice new tricks in safety.

It has skateparks, Olympic-standard trampolines and jumps with foam pit landings.

It must be one of the few places in the world where toddlers share their playground with the likes of Red Gerard, the gold medallist in snowboard slopestyle at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, who's one of the local pros who use the Barn.

Parents can bring their children to classes here from the age of one and, if you're at least eight, you can come along unaccompanied.

One of the coaches at the centre, Max Leabman, showed us around and told us a little more about it:

Complete novices can book a two-hour introductory session which will take you from basic front rolls, to the trampolines, to the jump ramps.

I would have had a go myself but I've got a dodgy right shoulder and left knee so decided against risking it (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

TubingReady for action

Injuries aside, I was not going to miss the chance to hurtle down the tubing hill while sitting very inelegantly in a rubber ring.

The Copper Mountain tubing hill is in the East Village.

You book for an hour and go down it as often as you like, any way you like.

There are many ways to "tube", it seems,  and if you like speed the more people the better...

Last but not least, there's the Rocky Mountain Coaster.

A number of US resorts have recently built rollercoasters in the heart of their ski areas which are open year-round.

Copper's opened in December.

It's about a mile long and first takes you up about 1,000 feet before you come back down, reaching a maximum speed of 25 miles an hour.

The whole ride lasts less than 10 minutes so it won't distract you for too long from the really important business.

Because however much fun there is to be had on a trampoline, in a rubber ring or on a rollercoaster, we'd always still rather be skiing!
