PLANETSKI SPEAKS TO NEW BOSS OF SWISS TOURISM - James Cove, Grindelwald, Switzerland

Martin Nydegger has much on his plate as overnight stays fall and the exchange rate bites. But the Swiss tourist industry is fighting back.

He took over the role in January with a remit to halt the slide and build for the future.

His work is already underway.
This week he has been addressing delegates at the International Ski Travel Market, ISTM, in Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland.

The event sees international suppliers (hotels, ski schools, transport organisations etc...) meet with buyers (tour operators, travel agents and the like).

They come from 17 countries and from as far a field as China, Israel and North America.

Europe is well represented.

"We have our challenges here in Switzerland in the winter but we have a long tradition of winter tourism and Switzerland was the first country to embrace it," he told the assembled delegates.

And he bought some slides:

And after the presentation the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, caught up with the new CEO of Switzerland Tourism outside the conference hotel, The Schwiezerhof, on a Spring morning.

ISTM has just announced that next year's conference will be in the Ski Welt in Austria towards the end of March.

"We are excited to return with ISTM to Austria and are confident it will help showcase the SkiWelt areas modern infrastructure and excellent facilities, whilst providing delegates with a warm and cosy atmosphere in which to conduct their business," said the ISTM event director, Luke Bolton.

ISTM is backISTM is back

ISTM has already been in Kitzbuehel and Soelden in the Tirol in Austria over past years.

"It is a fantastic to welcome back ISTM, one of the most important global ski trade events in the Austrian Tirol in 2019," said the Head of Market Management at the Tirol Tourist Board, Holger Gassler.

"The travel trade is vital for the touristic success of the Tirol region. The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, one our biggest and most important skiing areas in the Tirol region will be the perfect host to showcase a perfect ski infrastructure combined with Tirolean hospitality."
