PLANETSKI TOURS INNSBRUCK: PART TWO - James Cove, Innsbruck
Sunday April 22, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

It's time to hang up the skis and put on the walking shoes. Our city and ski trip continues to hit the tourist sites of Innsbruck. NEW & UPDATED

The start of the second city part of this trip didn't actually involve skiing but it did have a snowsports connection or two.

We started at The Olympic ski jump that towers over the city - the Bergisel.

And here is the panorama view:

Next door to the ski jump is the Tirol Panorama Museum.

It houses another museum commemorating the history of the Tirol with plenty of skiing artefacts on display:

And it houses this painting - you may need to turn the volume up as I was instructed by the guides to turn my volume down. Wink

And here is the Innsbruck scene from August 1809:

And nearby is this gem of a museum: Grassmayr.

A bell museum.

And here is the oldest bell in the collection: a 10th Centruy bell from Westphalia in Germany.

Grassmayr started making bells in 1599 and its bells ring out in over 100 countries across the world.

Its oldest bell still rings in Italy and was cast in 1636.

Grassmayr is the oldest family business in Austria with 11 generations having run it and it remains a working factory.

Every day at 5pm in Mosern the Peace Bell rings out across the Tirol symbolising good neighbourly relations in all the alpine countries.

It was cast at Grassmayr and weighs 10.18 kg with a height of 2.51m and a diameter of 2.54m.

All too soon the day drew to a close and our city and ski break came to an end.

I thought back to the first two days of skiing in Kuhtai and Stubai:
For the first day sightseeing in Innsbruck see the link below as I toured Hofkirch, Tirol Regional Heritage Museum and Nordkette:
And as I wandered along the banks of the River Inn and glanced over at the beautiful buildings across the river a thought suddenly popped into my head:

"Why not rent a flat in Innsbruck next winter and use it as a base to explore this part of the Alps from one of the finest cities in Europe?"

It has a ski resort all of its own with a lift in the centre of town plus some of the finest resorts in the Alps within an hour or so: St Anton, Hintertux, Solden, Obergurgl, Stubai. Pitztal Khutai, Mayrhofen and Ischgl to name just a few.

There are dozens of smaller ones that I have probably never heard of just waiting to be discovered.

The Italian border is  30-minutes or so away with ski its resorts on offer and Switzerland  is nearby.

Now there's an idea...  Cool
