SUMMER IN LES GETS: PART 3 - James Rampton, Les Gets
Monday July 9, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI's roving reporter is not generally renowned for his agricultural expertise but we find him in the mountains on a farm playing the role of Farmer Giles.

In fact, he is the kind of born-and-bred Londoner who gets a nosebleed outside the M25.

So, imagine his surprise when he is invited to play Farmer Giles (Fermier Gilles?) and taken to a French mountaintop farm to watch the ancient rural art of making goat's cheese.

In our ongoing search for summertime Alpine activities than can provide as much joy as the winter pastime of hurling yourself down a snowy slope on‎ a pair of flimsy planks, PlanetSKI are currently loitering in Les Gets.

More from James Rampton's adventures in Les Gets:

This afternoon our quest has brought us to a farm named La Chevrerie Des Ours (which means "the goat farm of the bears" - not much sign of them anymore).

Perched high on a mountain overlooking the charming village of Les Gets in the French Alps, the farm boasts a commanding view of the valley.

It also boasts more goats than you can shake a shepherd's stick at.

Veronique, the farmer who runs La Chèvrerie Des Ours, knows the name of every single one of her 65 goats.

They even have their own en-suite.

Aided and abetted by her loyal sheepdogs - goatdogs? - Orca and Anouk, Veronique brings the herd in for milking every morning, a process that yields 120 litres per day.

In a cheese-making room which could not be described as un-pungent, she then forms the solidifying milk into a sort of ice-hockey-puck shape, which takes eight days to mature on a rack.

After watching her make the cheese, we get to the real deal - sampling the product on a long table outside.

Goat's cheese is not to everybody's taste, but the stuff made at La Chèvrerie Des Ours does not disappoint.

The cheese, which is on sale at the farm, has a very resonant tang to it and a really appealing, lingering aftertaste.

In PlanetSKI's humble opinion, it may well be the nicest thing a goat has ever produced‎.

Cheese-making at La Chèvrerie Des Ours proves a surprisingly relaxing way of spending an afternoon in Les Goats - sorry, Les Gets.

From there, we return to unwind at the newly opened Annapurna Apartments in the centre of the village.

Offering facitilies which include a high-class restaurant (we can conform that the chocolate pudding is to die for), a very nice swimming pool, and elegant giant clocks reminiscent of the type Harold Lloyd hung from in Safety Last - the Annapurna Apartments are an exceedingly pleasant place to stay, in winter or summer.

All in all, we have loved our time in this very traditional village, which is light years away from the more soulless "moon base" resorts that pepper the French Alps.

You'd have to be very giddy goat indeed not to enjoy Les Gets.
