BUDGET SKI HOSTEL FOR THE FRENCH ALPS - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Tuesday August 21, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

A hostel offering low-cost accommodation will open in Les2Alpes this winter. Is this the way ahead?

With fears over the cost and future of the traditional chalet holiday, could this be the way to get your fix without making a huge dent in your finances?

On 15th December, the French resort will open what it says will be an "ultra-modern" hostel with 364 beds.

Forget the old-fashioned boarding school or dormitory-style hostels.

The People Hostel in Les2Alpes, which is at the entrance to the resort,  is a bit different.

Of its 86 bedrooms, 45 are private.

The other 41 will be shared accommodation with 4, 6 or 8 beds.

It will also have a restaurant and a bar open to the public, a chill-out room and a terrace.

How much will it set you back?

From just €19 a night.

Try getting a tartiflette and a glass of red for less than that in most French ski resorts.

The People Hostel is a branch belonging to the France Hostels group, which set up the first of its kind in Lille in northern France.

But this one is aimed firmly at budget-conscious skiers and snowboarders.

It will be interesting to see how successful it is and whether its clientele comes only from the school groups and backpacking market or is drawn from a wider field.

Here at PlanetSKI we know of many UK ski tour operators who are cutting back on the holidays they're offering and on staff while being forced to increase prices just to stay in business.

As our editor, James Cove, said in an article earlier this month: "The UK snowsports industry is having its biggest shake up that I can recall - something will emerge but exactly what it is remains to be seen. The only certain thing is the old model is past its sell by date and the traditional mass market ski chalet holiday appears to be on the way out as things stand."

The new development in Les2Alpes is one of several long-term projects underway to improve the resort, with investment of almost €500 million planned over the next 5 years.

If your ski budget is limitless, however, you might want to consider this...
