RV LIFE IN NZ - James Cove, New Zealand
Thursday September 6, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI is in a motorhome touring the ski resorts of New Zealand & much see besides. So, what's life like on the RV road?

It sounds like a travel dream but what is it really like spending two weeks in a large mobile tin can on 4-wheels?

During winter and in the mountains of the South Island.

Driving from resort to resort searching out the best snow.

New Zealand from the airNew Zealand resorts beckon

You'll probably either love it or loathe it.

Fortunately I'm in the former category.

I have done several RV ski trips in North America and in Europe.

For me it gives the freedom to roam at will - moving on from resorts if the snow is not so good and better elsewhere or staying as long as I want.

There's none of the hassle of booking hotel rooms with the endless packing and unpacking.

And, above all else, it is an adventure.

So far we've spent a few days in Wanaka accessing the ski resort of Cardrona:

And then down to Queenstown for the ski areas of Coronet Peak and The Remarkables:

We have also seen much else in between including a trip to Doubtful Sound in Fiordland - nothing to do with skiing but well worth a visit: PlanetSKI's RV trip in NZPlanetSKI's RV trip in NZ

Next up it is the town of Methven for our final ski area - Mt Hutt, with thousands of kms driven as we come towards the end of our adventures.

So, firstly what's it like inside the beast:

There's no doubt I miss a bath and a bit more space.

On a ski trip in an RV it gets cold at night so good heating and warm bedding is an absolute must.

Stepping in cold and with wet ski gear after a day on the slopes is not the height of pleasure either.

Cooking in an RV needs to be simple, but it can be tasty too.

Most nights we have checked into campsites (around £20 per night) for loos, showers, washing and security.

Though some of the washing facilies are not, er, as good as others.

But overall the facilites in the campsites of NZ are first rate.

We're not the only ones on the RV road at this time of year - below is the busy campsite in Wanaka with the ski resort of Cardrona about 30-minutes away.

The roads require much concentration at times, sometimes for the bends.

Other times for the monotony, though the views keep interest alive hour after hour on the road.

Now I have mentioned some of the other sights we have seen from our RV.

From the very south of the South Island.

This is about as far south as you can get:

Next stop Antarctica.

To the glaciers on the west coast:

To the limestone caves and other scenery near Arthur's Pass in the centre of the South Island:

You can of course see these in a car, but an RV gives the freedom to stay as long as you want - even into the hours of twilight and beyond.

In an RV you feel more part of the landscape, rather than just passing through it.

You can go to sleep with this view on your doorstep:

And wake up to this just a few paces away:

If it sounds like something you might enjoy then my advice is to give it a go.

If the thought of it fills you with horror then I'd stick to hotels - but you are missing out on a whole different way to see some ski resorts.

Next stop for PlanetSKI in a couple of days is Australia.

We are there for a month or so - seeing  the ski resorts of Mt Buller, Perisher to begin with and then a few others still to be sorted - though this time we are staying indoors.

It is possible to have too much of a good thing after all.Wink

However we are also doing more than skiing in our month-long trip round OZ and we're heading up to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine coast for a spot of beach chilling.

Maybe the call of an RV will be heard... we could be swapping snow for sand...
