The 'other' mountain range in Europe has opened for snowsports. Resorts fired up their lifts at the weekend. UPDATED

We have heard much of the snow in the Alps and the Rockies as winter gets underway.

But, what about the Pyrenees?

In Andorra, the French Pyrenees and the resorts on the Spanish side of the range.

On Saturday Les Angles in the French Pyrenees opened.

First out of the blocks in Andorra was the resort of Arcalis that opened on Thursday 29th November.

The Grandvalira area, Pas de la Casa and Soldeu, opened on Saturday, December 1st.

As did Vallnord, Pal and Arinsal.

"The team has welcomed the first day on the mountains with open arms - getting their ski legs back while out exploring the mountains," said PlanetSKI reader, Rebecca Crawford, from  Andorra Resorts.

"Saturday in Pas de la Casa was a bluebird powder day with Sunday being a warmer day in Pal-Arinsal with the bonus of having the piste all to ourselves."

"This season has a lot to offer; with the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup next March."

"Preparations are under way for the new ski platform and underground car park in Grandvalira Soldeu as well as new transparent gondola cabins - which are not for the faint hearted."

"What an amazing two days it has been and we can't wait to see what the rest of the season brings."

The recent cold snap has meant the cannons can be switched on and snow has been falling.

Depths though remain modest.

Here's Grandvalira in Andorra.

The big news from the principality is that the area of Grandvalira will remain united, there had been real fears the main resorts of Pas de la Casa and Soldeu would spilt. And what about the resorts of the French Pyrenees:

Font-Romeu, Pyrénées-Orientales (closes 31 March 2019)

Peyragudes, Hautes-Pyrénées (closes 31 March 2019)

Les Angles (closes end of March 2019)

Other resorts have set their opening days:

December 6th

Grand Tourmalet, Hautes-Pyrénées (closes 7 April 2019)

December 8th

Ax-les-Thermes, Ariège (closes 7 April 2019)

Cauterets (closes late April)

And in the Spanish Pyrenees:

La Molina opened some slopes on Saturday 26th November.

And at the weekend it was the turn of Formigal and Baqueira Beret.

"La Molina opened this week and with excellent flight options in to Barcelona, it offers a great option for a cheeky early season ski before the peak Christmas and New Year holidays arrive," said Katie Waddington from Zenith Holidays.

The company is one of a handful of UK operators that offer Spain as a skiing destination, see here for more.

The Pyrenees is an often overlooked mountain range but here at PlanetSKI we are big fans and visit most winters.

See here as we visited last winter:

If you haven't skied there before and are considering it for next winter it comes highly recommended by us at PlanetSKI.
