SNOW CENTRE COMING TO SWINDON - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Wednesday November 28, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

The operators of The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead are to open a second indoor real snow centre.

It's scheduled to open for skiing and snowboarding in 2020.

The new centre is part of a £270 million regional leisure complex in Swindon in Wiltshire.

A planning committee meeting on Tuesday approved the 15,800 square metres of indoor snow space in the North Star Leisure Complex.

Two-time Olympic snowboarder Jamie Nicholls - a regular at the The Snow Centre in Hemel - was at the meeting, along with the Managing Director, Ian Brown.

"This is an amazing opportunity for even more people to get into snow sports," Nicholls said.

"It will give those living in the South West of England; Swindon, Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and beyond the chance to get into skiing or snowboarding.

"I can't wait to hit the slopes in Swindon with the next generation of snow sports talent."

The new centre will have two real snow slopes.

The main slope will be 170 metres long - that's 10 metres longer than the one at Hemel.

There'll also be a 75 metre slope for lessons and a designated fun zone for sledging and snow play.

When it's built, it will become the UK's 7th indoor ski facility and the first new real snow slope since The Snow Centre at Hemel opened in May 2009.

PlanetSKI was at the official launch.

Like its sister site, The Snow Centre Swindon will offer lessons and lift passes for kids and adults looking to master their skills on one plank or two.

But this one will also welcome families and shoppers to the slopes for snow fun during their visits to other attractions within the 500,000 sq ft leisure, dining and retail complex.

It's set to be one of the largest in the UK.

The complex will have:

  • 13-screen cinema, including the largest IMAX screen in Europe
  • a 19-lane bowling alley
  • a trampoline park
  • a gym
  • shops
  • the existing Oasis Leisure centre

"We are delighted to be able to open a second real snow indoor slope and look forward to building on the success we've seen at our existing centre in Hemel Hempstead," The Snow Centre's Ian Brown said.

"A few opportunities for new ski facilities have presented themselves over the last few years, but for various reasons have not progressed beyond ideas.

"Swindon is a great location and we are thrilled that SevenCapital have been able to make this a reality."

SevenCapital is the property development and investment company leading the project.

"We're thrilled with the decision to grant full planning approval for the North Star Village, said John Watkins, director at SevenCapital.

"Since taking on the project in July 2017 the team has worked tirelessly to deliver on our promises to submit plans for an exciting regional leisure and retail destination that Swindon and the wider UK will benefit from significantly.

"We have delivered on all our planning promises and are now looking forward to getting on site and bringing those plans to life."

The Snow Centre at Hemel Hempstead is the closest real snow centre to London and welcomes around 230,000 skiers and snowboarders every year.
