CAIRNGORM FUNICULAR WILL BE CLOSED ALL WINTER
Thursday January 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

It's been confirmed that the mountain railway at the Scottish ski resort will be out of action for the whole season.

The funicular is the main lift for skiers and snowboarders to the top of the mountain.

The decision had been expected following concerns over the safety of the structure, which has been examined by specialist engineers, and the difficulty of carrying out any remedial work in the winter months.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise took over the ski centre after Cairngorm Mountain Limited went bust.

It has now said that it anticipates the funicular will not operate for several months.

HIE has received the engineers' report which had originally been expected at the start of December.

"We have received the report of the investigation into concerns over the funicular structure and we will publish it in due course," HIE told the Press and Journal newspaper.

"We are meeting with the contractor this week to go through the report in detail in order to fully understand its findings and determine next steps.

"In the meantime, we anticipate the funicular will remain out of service for the remainder of the winter season, with ski tows providing alternative uplift when conditions allow."

Local businesses are disappointed but not surprised at the announcement.

"At this point it's essential that there is a clear plan for Cairngorm's future with and without the funicular in operation," says the Aviemore and Glenmore Community Trust,  which was set up in 2017 with the aim of taking over the ownership and running of the Cairngorm Estate.

"AGCT is continuing to try and positively influence that process.

"We also believe that community engagement is more important now than ever, we are developing our plans and developing a model for community ownership that we hope to share soon."

The funicular has been closed since Monday 1st October to allow for a detailed assessment of the structure that supports the tracks.

The closure resulted in a series of setbacks for the ski area and criticism of the way Cairngorm was being run.
