THE SNOW HITS FRANCE - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Monday January 14, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Much of the French Alps has had a proper dump at last. Still not on the epic proportions of Austria, but looking good & now the sun's out. UPDATED

It's not been the perfect snowy January for many French resorts.

Last week some snow fell - but not in huge quantities.

Over the weekend it began to dump, and it kept going.

By Tuesday the snow had stopped and it was a bluebird day with perfect conditions.

Flaine in the Grand Massif ski area reported on Monday morning that it had been snowing heavily for two days:

It was a winter wonderland in Peisey-Vallandry, part of the Les Arcs ski area.

The resort posted several photos on Monday.

How amazing is our playground today!! Tomorrow will be a BLUE BIRD day!!! Will you come and play??

The new snow has raised the avalanche risk, so care is needed if you're planning to head off piste.

The avalanche safety expert Henry Schniewind of Henry's Avalanche Talk, who is based in Val d'Isere, says there's a real risk of remote triggering.

"Danger rating is level 4 nearly everywhere," he said on Monday.

""Recently we have experienced some very cold weather -20C & colder at 2000m.

"This has rotted old snow and created a very weak layer of old snow under the new snow."

Further south in France, there's not been as much snow, but at least there's been some.

This was Alpe d'Huez early on Tuesday, looking set for a beautiful day...
