The British Schoolgirl Races, which are organised by the Ladies Ski Club, first took place on the slopes of Gstaad in 1959, moving to Villars in 1976.

Sixty years on, the event retains the same friendly and inclusive spirit, welcoming girls of all levels.

This year it welcomes four new teams.

The event open to skiers who are new to racing, as well as those who are already racing competitively.

The races have proved to be a breeding ground for young British talent.

Olympian Chemmy Alcott and Paralympic sight guide Charlotte Evans being previous competitors.

The organisers say it also plays a vital role in giving aspiring female racers the chance to be part of well-organised on-snow races.

It is important for growing confidence and giving the young racers valuable competitive experience.

One of the sponsors is PlanetSKI partner, MPI Brokers, and its MD, Michael Petttifer is slopeside.

"MPI is present once again at the 60th Anniversary of the British School Girls Races here in Flaine," said Michael on Monday.

"There are 52 teams represented by 39 Schools in a great friendly fun atmosphere helped along by parents and teachers cheering their children ringing the MPI Cow bells.

"Today sees the teams race in the Giant Slalom in near perfect conditions after heavy snow last night.

"‘MPI Brokers is delighted to once again sponsor the BSR races - our tenth year. We also provide insurance for the event for both organisers and the teams."

The event is open to all UK schools and includes a range of age groups, including under 14s, under 16s and under 18s.

"Every year the races are fully subscribed, but we are delighted to be welcoming four new teams and over 150 girls, many of whom will be ski racing competitively for the first time," she said.

"It promises to be a fun few days for everyone involved."
