Monday February 11, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The Cretaz chairlift stalled in the Italian resort leaving 27 people stranded. Watch as the rescue unfolds on video.

The rescue took place on Monday morning in the ski resort of Cervinia, situated in Italy's Aosta Valley.

Due to a technical failure, the Cretaz lift stopped working.

It is unclear why the chairlift could not be restarted and an investigation is already underway.

A helicopter was used to winch the skiers and snowboarders from the chairlift and airlift them to safety.

The rescue operation took about 1 hour.

According to the Soccorso Alpino Valle d'Aosta, the rescue service for the Aosta Valley, the rescue was successful and no medical assistance was required for the stranded skiers and snowboarders.

Watch the footage below posted by Ennio Fosson who was on the spot at the time of the helicopter rescue.

The Cretaz chairlift is one of the key chairlifts departing from Cervinia's base station and delivers skiers to the higher parts of the mountain towards the cable car heading to Plan Maison.

The Cretaz chairlift accesses many areas suitable for children and beginners.

It is unclear how long the lift will remain closed.
