CLEAR SKIES FOR THE HOLIDAY
Monday February 18, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The sun is out, the snow is good. It's half-term heaven across the Alps & Pyrenees as the weather stays fine.

The weather could hardly be better for the busiest week of the European ski season.

It's sunshine all the way with generally mild temperatures.

Powder might be difficult to find - unless you're prepared to hike for it, that is - but the conditions are perfect for family skiing.

Blue skies with barely a cloud to be seen is pretty much the case across the board.

The PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, is in the Austrian Tirol, dropping in on some lesser known resorts to avoid the holiday crowds:

The alpine snow expert, Fraser Wilkin of weathertoski.co.uk is in Les Arcs in France.

"This glorious weather is not just confined to France," Fraser said on Monday morning.

"It is sunny right across the Alps today, and the weather will remain fine for most Alpine resorts all week long.

"There will be more in the way of cloud across the eastern Austrian Alps from mid-week onwards, with even the odd shower or flurry, but the vast majority of the Alps will have a glorious week of weather."

PlanetSKI reader Richard Critchlow is in Courchevel with his family.

"The weather is incredible for February," he told us after skiing on Monday.

"Afternoon highs of 10 to 12 degrees make for unseasonably sunburned faces.

"The snow is being resilient in the face of this challenge but cold nights mean the freeze-thaw cycle is making for some icy patches in an otherwise very adequate base.

"It's one of the busier weeks in the 3 valleys but if you avoid the bottlenecks in the centre of Courchevel and Meribel, the queues are actually not that bad."

"It's fair to say that, without the recent snowfall, the weather would be a bit much but, thanks to the recent snow, it's an amazing time to be here," Richard added.

One of our PlanetSKI contributors, Simon Wilson, is in Chamonix for the half-term week.

It looked pretty good driving into town.

And in town itself none too shabby.

"The off piste above Vallorcine and Le Tour was skiing pretty well today, despite exceptional hot weather for February," said Simon.

"The powder is long tracked out of course here, but our guides found plenty of steep north-facing pitches with excellent, chalky snow."

"And after midday there was some perfect spring snow on and off piste. All got a bit slushy in the afternoon."

We've trawled the social media pages of numerous resorts and ski schools to bring you some of the best images from across the mountains:

For a week, not the shadow of a cloud at the top of Cap de Pales! the resort said.

We'll be updating this report across the week, so do check back.
