The top of Cervinia is to be connected to the top of Zermatt by a new gondola. PlanetSKI reports on a highly significant new lift.

It has been talked about for years and now it looks like it is happening.

A lift between the top of the Italian resort Cervinia at Testa Grigia to the top of Zermatt in Switzerland at the Klein Matterhorn.

It is to be a state-of-the-art 3S cableway made by Leitner and is due to be completed by 2021.

It will be called ‘The Alpine Crossing' and will give a huge boost to summer skiing and summer tourism from Cervinia in the Aosta Valley in Italy.

It follows the new lift to the top of the Kleine Matterhorn from the Swiss side that opened for this winter.

"In winter it was always possible to get to the top from Cervinia but you had to ski down into Zermatt," said PlanetSKI's senior news reporter, Katie Bamber.

"This new lift will make a huge difference and also, very importantly,  means non-skiers can reach the Kleine Matterhorn both in winter and in summer."

Katie was skiing in Cervinia last month.

And check out her video as she skied the 20km run you can do from the Kleine Matterhorn all the way down to Cervinia's lower neighbour, Valtournenche, descending 2,300m.

"The views are out of this world, the Italian white peaks stretching on and on, the main reason why this region is my #1" said Katie.

All in all it looks like being a very important new lift.

There has been swift reaction from our good friends over at The Warren Smith Ski Academy.

"We are very excited to see the latest development of the new lift from the Cervinia side of the mountain.," said Rob Stanford from The Academy

"The recent addition from the Zermatt side made a huge difference to our Autumn courses and also looking ahead to our spring sessions this April."

"The new connection from the Testa Griga will be absolutely brilliant for our summer courses in 2021 an beyond."

"It will allow us to access the highest point without the normal use of the existing T-bar and this will be a of huge benefit to all levels of skiers who join us on our summer program."

And it is not just the summer skiers that will benfefit.

It is expected to bring many more summer tourists who simply want to go to the top of the Kleine Matterhorn - for the experience and the views.

"For us the new cable car will be a great opportunity to increase the tourism during the lowest seasons and to create a new product," said Enrico Vuillermoz from Cervino Tourism Management to PlanetSKI.

"I think that it will be possible to attract new customers interested exclusively in the crossing, especially in summer."

The contract for some of the design on the new infrastructure will go out to tender.

"It is hoped that opening up the design and use of the existing buildings to an architectural competition will improve the appearance of the landscape on Testa Grigia and integrate the development better into the surrounding mountain scenery and other natural features," said a statement from the Swiss lift compnay, Zermatt Bergbahnen.
