PLANETSKI AT NORDIC WORLD CHAMPS - James Cove, Seefeld, Austria
Wednesday February 27, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

We're at the Nordic World Championships in Seefeld in Austria. Doping cast its long shadow over proceedings but didn't spoil things.

If you have never been to a Nordic skiing race you should definitley put it on your list.

And if it happens the be the World Championships then so much the better.

What a day!

And somewhat different from last weekend's specatator snowsport event that we had the pleasure of watching:

We were in Seefeld in the Tirol to cheer on GB's Andrew Musgrave - a Top Ten finisher and one of the best Nordic skiers in the World.

His fellow GB athlete Andrew Young is world-class too.

Both were in action in the 15km Classic.

The atmosphere was simply incredible.

We ended up in the main stand at the start of the finish straight - we just followed the band.

We were surrounded by Norwegians who has come along to cheer (and drink) on their heroes.

It was a similar picture in the stands opposite, with some GB support too.

Andrew Young was the first GB athlete out of the blocks and was an early leader for a while.

He ended up in 36th position - a very creditable performance.

It was his best individual World Championships performance outside the sprint races.

But as the 90 or so athletes ended up on the same track separated at the start by 30 second intervals it all became somewhat confusing.

Especially as the track came through the start and finish area several times. - though who was actually in the lead Lord only knows.

Well thanks to the Lord and the commentators - without them we would have been truly baffled by proceedings.

We spotted Musgrave at the start:

We gave a reserved British cheer as Musgrave crossed the line in joint 8th place - an outstandiing achievement.

The 28-year-old has made strong improvements to his classic racing over the past two seasons.

He proved it by improving his 2017 result by four places in one of his best international performances.

The result came just four days after recording seventh place in Saturday's skiathlon.

And when the Norwegians heard our muffled cheers and saw a rather limp fist-pump they guessed we were from the UK:

"Andrew Musgrave is the best, a true hero - we love him in Norway."

'He lives in our country and speaks Norwegian you know."

"He has a Norwegian girlfriend and trains with our team sometimes."

"He is one of ours - practically Norwegian."

But what were the Norwegians like as the eventual race winner, Martin Johnsrud Sundby, came onto the finish straight?

The place went er, bonkers!

And with that my wife and I became Norwegian for a moment as beers (and hats) were shared.

The Nordic 15km Classic at the World Championships - what a fabulous sporting event.

And if you want to find out what X-country is like as a mere mortal then PlanetSKI's chief reporter, Jane Peel, has been doing it this week in Norway.

Check out her report here:

Sadly the Nordic World Championships were tainted by the arrest of 9 people for alleged doping offences.

Including 5 athletes - one of whom was in the process of doping as the authorites pounced.

See here for the PlanetSKI news report:

I prefer to remember the day for the fantastic sporting spectacle and Andrew Musgrave's stunning result.
