SHIFFRIN TAKES THE CROWN
Sunday March 3, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The US ski sensation Mikaela Shiffrin has won her third overall International Ski Federation Alpine Skiing World Cup title in a row. NEW

She didn't even have to race to take the honours.

Snowstorms forced the cancellation of the super-G competition in Rosa Khutor near Sochi in Russia.

It means she now has an unassailable lead with a lead of 719 points.

Only 700 are now up for grabs.

She has had 14 victories this season and won two god medal at the recent World Championships in Sweden.

Shiffrin was  assured of winning the title in Sochi as neither she nor her nearest rival were competing.

Shiffrin has suggested the high travel costs of getting to Sochi discouraged her.

Instead, she has been training in Italy ahead of next week's races at the Czech resort of Spindleruv Mlyn.

So, what is her reaction to the title?

She seems most pleased with her three World Cup wins in the super-G.

"This year it's even something more special because a fair portion of my wins have come in super-G," Shiffrin said.

"I always felt like I wanted to be able to earn it in all events. I'm working on getting to the point where I can earn it in slalom, (giant slalom), super-G and downhill, but I felt like this season was a really big step."
