WHAT’S NEW FOR NEXT WINTER? - James Cove, Axamer Lizum, Austria
Thursday March 7, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI is out with Ellis Brigham as it shoots its catalogue for next season. We go behind the scenes with exclusive access.

The Ellis Brigham photo shoot has been going for 32 years - it began back in 1987.

For the first decade it all took place in Chamonix and since has been moving around.

Steamboat in the USA, Lake Louise in Canada, the Norwegian resort of Hemsedal and Ischgl in Austria to name but a few.

This year it is all taking place in the little-known resorts of Axamer Lizum and Muttereralm near Innsbruck in the Tirol in Austria.

Good for us at PlanetSKI as we are living in Innsbruck and the resorts are not little-known to us - we love them.

"They provide some great photo locations with the variety of snow and terrain we need," said the creative director of the Ellis Brigham shoot, Dave Whitlow.

And he should know, he's been involved in all 33 of the shoots for Ellis Brigham.

See here for more about Ellis Brigham.

Also here today is Harry Cavill, the merchandiser for Ellis Brigham.

The photographer is Ben Read.

Andy Bennett - Instructor with the Warren Smith Ski Academy and same as Pam - BIG friend!

John Vaitkus - Freeride skier from Chamonix who has been at every shoot bar one.

The idea today is to concentrate on next year's general clothing and accessories.

It is organised with military precision.

And a lot of gear to be carried up the hill:

  • 20 hats
  • 25 pairs of gloves
  • 20 pairs of goggles

Each rider has 5 complete change of clothes - that's 20 jackets and another 20 pants.

Ben Read is a seasoned pro.

He directs the riders, and they do the stuff.

"Don't jump this too high or you will disappear in the background of the mountain," he instructs.

The rider does as he is told, but not quite for the PlanetSKI camera.

Can you see John?

There is of course a lot of hanging around and ensuring each item is shot in the right way.

With brand labels showing and each garment, goggle and glove made to look as good as possible.

So, what's new for next season, the winter of 2019/20?

"Mono-chrome is in and the 70s vibe will be back. Stripes down the side of ski pants and they will be tight for women with elasticated knees," said Harry to me.

"In term of colours then mustard and gold will be the colours to be seen in, with dusty pinks and blues too."

The biggest change of the Ellis Brigham shoot in the past three decades and more is the arrival of digital photography and, of course, the internet.

"It is really a multi-platform shoot now as we provide images for the White Book catalogue and of course our web site, social media and all our digital outlets," said Dave Whitlow.

"The printed catalogue is certainly not dead and is as valuable as ever."

"People like a hard copy brochure and many pick them up in our stores and it is like holding hands with it."

"It has a long shelf life and people like to flick through the catalogue at their own pace at home".

"For many when it arrives it marks the start of winter and is a work of reference."

"We used to shoot many less pictures when we shot on film but with digital we take many thousands."

"How many?" I asked Ben.

"I shoot around 1,600 images per day and that means more than 11,000 over the course of the week," he replied.

"How many get used?" I asked Dave.

"About 300 or so," he replied.

The shoot itself is spread over 7-days and in my morning with the team I can honestly say I haven't seen a more professional set up.

Each person knew their role and did their job with the minimum of fuss.

If there were egos at work I didn't see any.

This was the small piece of terrain where the guys and girls put in their work.

Each image will look different and each will showcase the item of clothing or accessory it is meant to.

Hats off.
