SKI EXEC ACCUSED OF $2.4M THEFT
Thursday April 18, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The 51-year-old man is alleged to have stolen skis, snowboards & other goods while he worked as an Aspen Skiing Co executive.

Derek Johnson and his 48-year-old wife Kerri have been charged with theft of more than $1 million, according to court documents.

The Aspen Times reports that the charge is a felony on a par with attempted murder.

The couple have also been accused of burglary, cybercrime and conspirary.

They face up to 24 years in prison, if convicted.

Derek Johnson - a former city councillor and Mayoral candidate - was sacked by Skico in December following the theft allegations.

The newspaper says Johnson helped set up the D&E Snowboard Shop in Aspen Snowmass and sold it to Skico in 2001.

He was kept on as Managing Director of the company's retail-rental division.

The court documents say Skico's human resources department received a tip-off alleging Johnson had been stealing demo skis and selling them on eBay.

Between 2010 and 2018 an eBay account called ‘sportandski' listed $2.15 million in total sales.

Police also found skis and snowboards worth more than $224,000 in a storage unit rented by the Johnsons, which have been returned to the company.

The couple are also said to have billed Skico almost $42,000 since November 2015 for ski boxes they used to send the allegedly stolen Skico equipment to their eBay customers.

The charges follow an investigation which is reported to have involved security camera footage and GPS tracking of the goods between the shop, the Johnsons' home and the storage unit.
