CAIRNGORM OWNERS BACK COMMUNITY TAKEOVER - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Thursday April 18, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Could the dream become reality? The Scottish mountain resort run by the locals. It's moved a step closer.

The campaign for community ownership of the Scottish ski resort has been given a huge boost by the landowners, Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

HIE has given the Aviemore and Glenmore Community Trust a £90,000 funding package.

The money is specifically to support the Trust as it develops detailed plans for community ownership of the Cairngorm Mountain Ski Resort.

It will be used initially for two part-time appointments - a Project Manager and an Administrative Officer - with the possibility of further roles later.

It's a big vote of confidence in the Trust and a significant intervention.

The Trust has stepped up its efforts to take over the resort following the long-term closure of the Funicular railway - the main lift up the mountain - and the ensuing crisis.

It has been in extensive talks with HIE since the previous operator, Cairngorm Mountain Ltd (CML), went into administration at the end of 2018 and HIE took back control of the estate.

Locals and visitors to Cairngorm have expressed fears for the future of the ski resort, blaming poor management by the previous leaseholders for the problems it now faces.

The Aviemore and Glenmore Community Trust was set up in 2017 with the specific aim of taking over ownership of the Cairngorm estate.

"We are delighted HIE have come to the table in offering us financial support in employing two key members of staff to the trust," said Mike Gale, Director of the Trust.

"This is a fantastic positive step and commitment to the community from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in recognising our professionalism and vision to deliver a sustainable future for Cairngorm being run by the community.

"The people living, working, managing and owning businesses in the area deserve to have a world class summer and winter attraction with a sustainable future and the support we have received through the community to deliver on our plans gains momentum every week.

"One of the frustrations in the past has been the reluctance to be listened to. We are now seeing the community's ideas being put into a plan, both with short term and long-term benefits. Everything from an alpine coaster and mountain biking trails to changing the catering set up at the day lodge.

"The goal has always been to make the business sustainable for the future and the ideas and support from the community are only helping cement this for the future".

HIE says it has a well-established track record of supporting local communities and their economies.

"Aviemore and Glenmore Community Trust have demonstrated huge commitment to work towards a sustainable future for Cairngorm Mountain, which is a goal we clearly share, both as the landowner and the region's development agency," said James Gibbs, HIE's area manager for Inner Moray Firth.

"The trust's ideas are very closely aligned with the vision that was set out in the uplift review that HIE commissioned from international consultants last year, and we are delighted to be able to support them to develop their plans further as a valued partner in the community."
