Monday April 29, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Four ski tourers have been killed in an avalanche in the Valais region of Switzerland.

It happened above 3,000 metres near Fieschertal in the Bernese Alps.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Valais Police said the skiers were reported missing when they failed to arrive as expected at their accommodation on Friday evening.

They had left the Finsteraarhorn refuge at 9am on Friday.

They were heading towards the Kondordia refuge above the Aletsch glacier via the Grünhornlücke mountain pass.

The area is a well-known ski touring route.

The refuge warden contacted the emergency services when they failed to appear.

The rescue services, including a helicopter from Air Zermatt, flew over the pass.

Several avalanches were spotted in the area, but nothing to identify where the victims might be.

Bad weather meant it was not possible to resume the search until Saturday afternoon.

The bodies were found and recovered.

All were wearing avalanche transceivers.

The four who died are reported to be German.

They have not been named.

An investigation is underway.

The avalanche risk was 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 at the time.

According to the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, 19 people have died in Switzerland this year in avalanches.
