SKIING INTO MAY - James Cove, The Tirol
Tuesday April 30, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI is in the Tirol making some turns while it's been bikiinis & speedos in the Aosta Valley. See here for where you can still ski.

First we look at conditions in Pitztal in the Tirol.

It closes this weekend, and we're on its slopes enjoying the final few days of its epic season.

Conditions could hardly be better.

There is more snow in the forecast for the coming few days in the Tirol, but in the meantime it's wall-to-wall sunshine with plenty of skiing to be had.

So, will I be wearing my speedos for Pitztal's end of season this weekend?

They were in Cervinia in the Aosta Valley in Italy the resort as it held its swimwear parade on May Day (the resort also closes this weekend, May 5th).

And if you are wondering what Cervinia was like earlier in the season then check out our visits:
In Austria the resorts that closed on Wednesday included the Dachstein Glacier, Soelden, Kitzbuehel, Ischgl and Obertauern.

Ischgl saw off the season of 2018/19 in its usual musical style.

On Tuesday Lenny Kravitz gave it his all at the Top of the Mountain closing concert.

Here was the snowy scene ahead of the concert:

It has now shut up shop and brought the curtain down on its season.

And Kitzbuehel closed on Wednesday with people out in their lederhosen:

In France Val d'Isere is also now shut.

In Italy it's Livigno, Cortina d'Ampezzo and Prali closing their lifts for the final time.

The Swiss resort of Samnaun, a neighbour to Ischgl, also shut on May 1st.

So, what are conditions currently like?

Earlier this week PlanetSKI was in Kauntertal in the Tirol in Austria with plenty of fresh snow coming down.

We were putting next year's skis through their paces at the Ellis Brigham Ski Tests.

There was some snow first thing on Monday morning.

And no report on Kaunertal is complete without mention of the 40-minute road journey up from the valley floor.

Especially in Spring snow.

Beautiful to start with:

And then things get a bit narrower on the small single track road by the lake.

You need to breathe in if a car comes in the opposite direction:

One the way up I counted 22 hair-pin bends and then gave up as I needed to concentrate on the driving.

And at the top, deep mid-winter at the end of April with hardly a soul around.

It's a similar scene in other parts of the Tirol.

Here is Hintertux that remains open for skiing.

There is great snow and plenty of turns still to be made.

UPDATE:

And one of our regular readers has reminded us over on social media that there's still plenty of skiing to be had in Norway and other parts of Scandinavia.

Thanks Thomas!
