Wednesday May 8, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

There are further signs of growing interest as lift ticket sales boom and an indoor slope opens. PlanetSKI reports. NEW

One of China's leading ski regions has reported that lift ticket sales exceeded one million for the first time last season.

The Chongli district of Zhangjiakou city in north China's Hebei Province has some of the most advanced ski area infrastructures in the country.

It will host many of the ski events at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

The International Ski Federation, FIS, reports that officials say total lift ticket sales at the area's seven ski resorts last season reached 1.07 million during a 101-day ski season.

The first ski resort in Chongli opened in 1996 attracting a few thousand of China's early skiers.

Numbers reached 40,000 by 2003 and 200,000 a decade ago in 2009 with the number growing every year.

Between them the region's seven ski areas today have 169 pistes with a combined length of 162 kilometres, served by a total of 67 ski lifts.

Skiing is booming in China as it prepares to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
It also aims to create 300m skiers and snowboarders.
Meanwhile Asia's first indoor slope for X-country skiers opens in China.

The new Beishan All-Weather Cross-Country Ski Resort in Jilin Province has a 1,308m indoor ski run and a 1,616m outdoor ski run.

It cost £112m to construct.

It will be used by athletes and the general public alike.
