SNOWBOARDER'S COMEBACK FROM CANCER
Friday May 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

A Winter Olympic medallist diagnosed with cancer last December hopes to be fit to return to competition at the end of the summer.

Max Parrot won silver in the slopestyle at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and is a nine-times X Games medallist.

He is targeting the X Games in Norway on 31st August for his comeback.

The event is just two months after the 24-year-old Canadian is due to finish his treatment.

Parrot found out he had Hodgkin Lymphoma after discovering a lump in his neck just before Christmas.

He has had nine rounds of chemotherapy with three more to come but is due to finish his treatment by the end of June.

He says a recent scan showed that most of the cancer was gone.

Parrot has been able to get on his snowboard in between treatments, travelling to Whistler four times with friends.

The announcement of an X Games stop in Norway, gave him something to aim for.

Parrot recognises that it's going to be tough to recover his fitness in time to compete in Norway.

"This is going to be a pretty big challenge," Parrot told a news conference.

"It depends on [each] patient, but some patients get their energy back after two years.

"My plan is to get it back in only two months. That will be a hard summer for training. Hopefully I can get my energy back and my cardio.

"I have lost a lot of cardio in the past month so if I can get that back, hopefully I can go to X Games."
