IT AIN'T OVER YET! - James Cove, Stubai, Tirol, Austria
Monday May 13, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

It may be the middle of May but it feels like the middle of winter in the handful of resorts still open. PlanetSKI is skiing powder in Stubai. UPDATED

If you are basking in the sun in the UK or elsewhere in Europe then it may be hard to believe there is huge amounts of snow at some of the resorts that are still open.

But there is.

Here is Stubai in the Tirol in Austria in the middle of May.

The images from Stubai were taken this week during a break in the clouds:

PlanetSKI headed up earlier in the week - Monday 13th of May to be precise.

Last week I was skiing in Hintertux.
This week it was the turn of Stubai to provide the goods.

I headed off from Innsbruck first thing with snow on the trees above the city.

On the 40-minute journey to Stubai the fresh snow was dripping off the trees.

And I certainly wasn't the only one still skiing with the ski bus going and a decent amount of vehicles in the car park.

As I headed up I was glad I had chosen my powder skis for the day.

And at the mid-station:

Now I would like to bring you pictures and tales of the snow but, as I said, the visibility was poor for my visit.

In fact pretty much non-existent:

One thing is for sure - when the clouds lift properly here is going to be some great powder here.

The bashers are already out clearing things up:

So, where else is open in the Alps and what are the closing dates?

Austria

21st May:

Kaunertal glacier

2nd June:

Kaprun

10th June:

ITALY

19th May:

SWITZERLAND

26th May:

Zermatt in Switzerland and Hinertux in Austria, are open year-round.

And as I headed back down the valley after skiing in Stubai - snow still remained.

And back at Innsbruck it is still possible to see winter.

Oh, and just in case you are  wondering it has been snowing elsewhere in Europe too.

Here's Jasna in Slovakia:

Next up I'm trying my hand at some of the spring activities on offer here in the Tirol.

I'm off e-biking near Kitzbuehel - check back for that report later in the week...
