POW UK SET TO GROW
Tuesday May 28, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The climate change charity Protect Our Winters UK is planning to expand and step up its campaigning.

The charity is the UK branch of the international climate change group, Protect Our Winters, which was set up in the USA in 2007 by professional snowboarder, Jeremy Jones.

POW UK has just published its first Impact Report to mark its full year operating as a UK charity.

It highlights its work over the past year and sets out clear goals for its next 12 months.

In 2018, it says it:

  • developed partnerships with 5 outdoor and low carbon businesses & 9 universities
  • launched its corporate membership club POW360
  • presented to more than 2,000 people at autumn events
  • recruited its first paid General Manager

We spoke to the General Manager, Lauren MacCallum, in Laax, in April.

POW UK also ran its first financial services campaign, as we reported at the time:

It joined StopClimateChaosScotland in a challenge to the Scottish Parliament about its climate policy.

"In 2018, global emissions reached record highs and climate records were smashed around the planet," says the POW UK Chair, Sandy Trust, in the report.

"The scientific community continued to scream about the level of risk we are running and how little time we have left to avert disaster.

"All of which serves to underline our purpose to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy."

In the next 12 months POW UK says it will be focusing on four main goals:
  • Growing its supporter network, with a particular focus on wider corporate engagement in the outdoor industry
  • Developing its bespoke climate change training programme for the outdoor community
  • Fundraising to increase its staff and co-ordinate action across its network of brands, influencers and individuals
  • Running focused campaigns to speed up corporate, financial and policy changes on climate change as well as positive individual lifestyle choices.
POW UK has supporters and ambassadors among the snowsports and outdoor sports communities.

They include GB snowboarders Billy Morgan and Katie Ormerod.

"We will only be effective if we have a large supporter base to bring to the table," the report says.

"A key focus is therefore reaching beyond our snowsports roots to the entire UK outdoor community.

"Our strategy for doing this is to build partnerships with a range of brands who can help us to do this. "
