Thursday June 13, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The three Swedish regions which will host events if Stockholm-Åre is awarded the 2026 Winter Games have backed the bid publicly for the first time.

The chairs of the Executive Council in the regions have written a joint letter of support which has been published in Sweden's daily newspapers.

They say their Winter Olympics would be "about much more than just world-class competition and an unforgettable festival atmosphere" and would "showcase Sweden to the world".

The intervention is important as Stockholm- Åre is up against strong opposition from the only other contender, Milan-Cortina.

The Italian bid has strong government and public backing.

It has been assessed by the International Olympic Committee's Evaluation Commission as meeting all the criteria for a successful games.

The Stockholm-Åre bid team is fighting back.

It has confirmed its pledge to make a Swedish Olympics the first climate-positive Games:

"An Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sweden would be delivered in a uniquely sustainable way - in terms of the environment, but also in terms of the economy and wider society," the regional council chairs say in their joint letter.

"The focus around sustainability for 2026 is extremely good for Sweden, a nation leading in this area globally, thanks to long-standing systematic work on sustainable development."

It adds: "This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Sweden and Swedish expertise to the world.

"Properly managed, an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sweden can make an impact long after 2026 and open up new markets and opportunities for Swedish companies and businesses."

The three regions are Stockholm, Jämtland Härjedalen and Dalarna.

The ski resort of Åre, in Jämtland Härjedalen, which held the Alpine World Ski Championships this year,  would be the venue for alpine and snowboard events.

Falun in Dalarna would most likely host ski jumping and Nordic events.

The organisers of the bid say they have support from the national, regional and municipal authorities.

"The Regional Governments of Stockholm, Jämtland Härjedalen and Dalarna have formally guaranteed the provision of all necessary public services to the Games," the bid committee says.

The International Olympic Committee will make its decision on who will host the 2026 Winter Olympics at a meeting in Lausanne on 24th June.
