Thursday June 13, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Pocket-sized ski racer Luca Westbrook is just 9. But he's already tasted success at the GB and Swiss national championships.

He could be an alpine star in the making.

Here at PlanetSKI we are always on the lookout for up-and-coming snowsports talent.

Many of those we have featured have since gone on to bigger and better things.

So what's the big deal about Luca?

Well, here is a shot of him in action....

And he's a snippet of footage from one of his races at the Swiss Championships.

Luca is a double British champion, winning two events at this year's GB Championships in Tignes in April.

He won the two-run giant slalom race by 1.80 seconds.

He won the Kombi (a bit like Ski Cross, we are told) by more than 2 seconds.

A week earlier he had been on the podium at the Swiss Championships.

He was third in the giant slalom.

Luca has joint British and Swiss nationality.

Dad Andy is British and mum Corina is Swiss.

They moved to Flims in Switzerland from their former home in Richmond, Surrey, when their son was six.

By then, however, Luca was already a talented skier.

His mum is an instructor and first took him out on skis when he was just two and a half.

"He just absolutely loved it," Andy told PlanetSKI.

"Apart from all the time he spent on the ground eating snow, which I'm told is quite normal for kids that age.

"The talent definitely doesn't come from me."

But the need for speed probably does.

Racing is in the Westbrook blood.

Andy used to race go-karts and his brother Richard is a successful professional driver who races in America.

"Luca has always been interested in racing," Andy said.

"When we moved out here it was clear that was the direction he was going in."

Luca soon tried out for and was accepted in the Flimserstein Race Team.

"He's not looked back since," Andy added.

This summer Luca has chosen to go of all five ski training trips organised by his Club.

On 26th June he turns 10.

It means that next winter he'll go up an age group to compete in the under-12 category.

Far from fearing the new challenge, Luca is looking forward to it.

"I like that I am able to ski fast!" he told PlanetSKI.

"I love racing and also the technical side of skiing where we have to learn different disciplines.

"It's great fun skiing with my friends too"

If Luca keeps on progressing and enjoying his racing there'll come a time when he has to decide whether to compete for Switzerland or Great Britain.

We have confidence that the talent scouts at GB Snowsport will be keeping a close eye on what happens next.
