SWISS PLANES PERFORM OVER WRONG EVENT - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Wednesday July 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Patrouille Suisse was due to fly over an event to mark first flights over the Alps. Instead they performed over a yodelling festival.

There was a gathering to mark the centenary of the death of the Swiss aviation pioneer, Oskar Bider, in Langenbruck in near Basel last weekend.

Bider was the first person to fly over the Alps in both directions, a feat he accomplished in 1913 at the age of 22.

However the Patrouille Suisse missed its target by 6km and performed over a yodelling festival in nearby Mumliswell instead.

The planes are similar to the UK's Red Arrows.

"According to a ministry of defence spokesman, the team leader spotted the large white tent of the yodelling get-together and, assuming it was the target, flew overhead. An unauthorised helicopter flying  in the area added to the confusion," said a report on Swiss Info.

And the reason for the confusion?

The planes are more than 40-years old and do not have GPS.

"Navigation is done on the basis of a map, a pen, and human sight," said a Ministry of Defence spokesman.

There are red faces all-round as the display team is held in similar esteem as the Red Arrows.

Here at PlanetSKI we have seen the planes in action in the right pace - ahead of the the Lauberhorn race in Wengen each January.

And a fabulous display they put on too.

The yodellers of Mumliswellare reported to have enjoyed their unexpected aerial display.

Jacqueline Donzé commented on Facebook: "Stunning ... just great .... thanks for the show" with the following photograph.
