PROTECT OUR WINTERS TARGETS EUROPE - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Wednesday July 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The snowsports environmental pressure group has received $50,000 from both Burton Snowboards & Nidecker Group to target Europe.

The donations were made as the group held its annual Global Summit in Austria.

POW was founded in the United States in 2007 by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones.

The not-for-profit organisation has expanded into Europe and we have reported on its work in the past:

The  $100,000 will help build a strategy for the European market, grow regional POW affiliates chapters and cover upfront costs.

Jake Black, POW's Program Manager in Colorado, USA, oversees the efforts of the European chapters.

"Every country in our European coalition is working hard to reduce its emissions, but all are coming up short due to a variety of limitations," said Black.

"We believe that by creating a multiyear strategic plan that provides a regional vision, each country can then develop their own plans that leverage the outdoor community in influencing systemic political

solutions to help reduce emissions.

"Europe is ripe for climate action and POW aims to add value to the movement by bringing the outdoor community to the table."

Regional chapters in Europe will push for systemic political solutions to climate change by engaging the outdoor community in climate advocacy.

The UK has an established group that has been active for several years, POW UK.

"POW UK isn't about delivering messages of doom and gloom," said he founder, Sandy Trust.

"We know that doesn't work. We want to tap into all the enthusiasm and excitement that people have for snowsports, and to channel that passion into positive action around climate change so we can protect our winters for future generations."

The BBC presenter, Ed Leigh, is a keen supporter.

The ski instructor, Warren Smith from the Warren Smith Ski Academy is another supporter.
