CANDIDE THOVEX TAKES TO WATER - Katie Bamber, Senior News Reporter
Tuesday July 16, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The freeskier makes his own rules (and sport) as he skies on snow, sand, dirt, grass, volcano, jungle & stone. Now its waves.

He's a ski-entrepreneur, a dare devil.

He gone beyond big mountain freestyle.

Each time he does something on skis the way is paved for something bigger and better; the bar is raised.

Candide Thovex doesn't even need snow to ski.

First he won every discipline of the X Games.

Then he caught the attention of the world by jumping the 37-metre Chad's Gap in Alta, Utah.

Candide turned his sights on unspoiled and unforgiving backcountry faces, and just kept on going.

He rides on sand, dirt, grass, volcano, jungle, stone.

And now he's only gone and walked it onto the water.

The Wave:

Earlier this week Candide's session on a wave in Spanish Basque Country went viral.

What's cool about this video, though, is it shows it behind the scenes.

The struggle behind what he eventually makes seem like something I could aspire to do.

I take it back, now, watching on...

Earlier this year the incredible video 'Ski the World' circulated wherein he descends, jumps or dodges wonders of the world:

The Zhangye Danxia Landform in China, Terra Cotta warriors in Mongolia some volcanoes somwhere cool, the Great Wall of China, Capadocia in Turkey, the rainforest, some more sandunes...

Where will he go next as he explores on, making up his own sports and rules?

We can't write this, though, without citing (and lauding) Chuck Patterson.

A man that took skis to the biggest of waves nearly a decade ago.

Chuck followed the biggest swell of the year to Maui, to see if he could see if he could take on, on skis, Pe'ahi or 'Jaws'.

It's considered one of the most powerful waves on earth.

This piece wouldn't be right without a mention to the man who brought the sport of skiing to the big screen.

Warren Miller.

He is recognized as the most radical sports filmmaker of the time.

Warren Miller was once described as a "combination of Jean-Claude Killy, Robert Redford, Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen".

Catch up here on the life of the legend and his legacy:
I'd love this article on awe-inspiring athletes and creators to go on and on.

Hit me up with others who should make this list.
