THREDBO FIRST RESORT IN AUSTRALIA TO GO 100% GREEN - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Monday July 22, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

All its major resort operations are now supplied by renewable sources of power. It's been hosting an environmental week.

The initiative is in collaboration with Red Energy as Thredbo has purchased nine gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year.

It is equivalent to the electricity used by 1,500 average homes and powers all the major users of power in the resort - lifts, offices, restaurants and other facilities.

"This agreement goes a long way to preserving the backyard we love, for future generations," said the resort in a statement.

For the past decade Thredbo has had a partnership with Greenfleet to offset the operation emissions of the entire fleet of snow groomers and company vehicles.

It has a range of other initiatives:

  • Adding an optional $4 add-on to lift ticket purchases that plants a tree nearby to offset the energy expenditure from running lifts.
  • Partnering with Protect Our Winters (POW) to spread awareness of environmental issues and what can be done about them.
  • Removing all single use plastic bags from Thredbo outlets and replacing them with biodegradable alternatives.
  • Implementing flow restrictors on water sources throughout the resort that prevent wasteful use and preserve water .
  • Installing LED light fixtures wherever possible to save energy.

Also part of Thredbo's 2019 Environmental Week, Thredbo has teamed up with Toyota and Greenfleet to make a positive impact on the local community and the environment.

Across the weekend of 27 - 28 July 2019, guests can purchase a tree for $4.00 that will offset the emissions of their travel to the snow that is then planted regionally.

Thredbo has committed to match all weekend donations dollar for dollar.

Since 2014, Thredbo guests have offset nearly 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by planting over 30,000 trees.
