Tuesday July 23, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The accident happened at Thredbo in New South Wales as high winds and heavy snow battered the Australia ski resort.

A four-seater chair fell from the cable on the Gunbarrel Quad Chairlift on Monday afternoon.

The chair fell from a height of approximately 5 metres, just below the top station.

"Thredbo can confirm there was an isolated incident affecting a single chair on Gunbarrel Chairlift at approximately 3pm on Monday 22 July 2019 caused by a freak gust of wind," said a resort spokesperson to local media.

A man was on the lift and escaped without serious injury.

The chair fell into deep snow that cushioned the landing.

The person was shocked but was able to walk away.

He was treated by medical staff for bruising but was otherwise unhurt.

Winds were gusting up to 93 km/h at the time of the accident.

In 2016 a chair also fell from the same lift in the same place as it approached the top station.

Other lifts in the resort were stopped on occasion through the day as the high winds hit.

The resorts in Australia have been hit by a series of storms in recent days:

A full safety check of the Gunbarrel lift has been carried out and an investigation is underway.

The lift remains closed.

The Gunbarrel chairlift was built in 1988 and travels at five metres per second.

The lift can take up to 2,800 people per hour up the mountain.
