China's winter sports market is worth £40 billion with 1.5 m jobs. Preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics remain on track.

That's what the International Olympic Committee Evaluation Commission were told this week as they visited Beijing ahead of the Games.

"Beijing 2022 is delivering on its vision to engage 300 million people in winter sports, and we can see real benefits resulting from the various actions that are being undertaken across the country," IOC Coordination Commission Chair Juan Antonio Samaranch said.

"We have heard about some impressive developments this week that exemplify the vision for winter sports in China in terms of mass participation, elite sport and tourism. This progress is very encouraging for the long-term future of winter sport, both in China and internationally."

Skiing continues to grown as China prepares to host the Games.
It also aims to create 300m skiers and snowboarders.

A key part of Beijing's successful bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games was the promise to use the event to help encourage 300 million Chinese people take up winter sports.

By the end of 2018, there were 742 ski resorts and 596 ice rinks throughout the country.

This has led to an increased number of winter sports events and there are plans to bid for more international competitions.

During the 2018-2019 season, there were 4,401 district level, municipal and national level winter sports events in China.

8.15 million people took part.

Preparations for the Games are well underway.

Plans for the test events continue to be on track.

The programme has been finalised, with 19 Olympic test events and five Paralympic test events.

The first test event, the FIS Alpine World Cup (Downhill & Super G), will take place on 15th and 16th February 2020.

A strategic cooperation agreement has been signed between the International Ski Federation (and Chinese digital platform Sina Sports.

It aims to help promote snow sports in the build-up to the 2022 Olympics.

There are several aspects to the partnership, including the Sina Alpine Ski Cup plus a mass participation skiing competition series in China which will be officially endorsed by FIS.

It will also cover the promotion of FIS's grassroots beginners programme "Get Into Snow Sports-China" and the installation of a FIS destination on Weibo, one of the biggest social media platforms in China.

This will feature coverage of FIS events and promote its activities in China such as Get Into Snow Sports.

The agreement was signed by FIS President Gian Franco Kasper and the world governing body's secretary general Sarah Lewis.

"We firmly believe that today's important signing ceremony for a strategic partnership between Sina Sports and FIS adds another important contribution to the promotion of skiing and snow sports in China which we enthusiastically welcome," said Sarah Lewis.
